It is a time to celebrate the contributions of civil rights leaders who dedicated their lives to this cause. In this poem, we honor three of these leaders, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Harriet Tubman.
Black History Month, a time to celebrate
The contributions of those who made it great
From slavery to freedom, they fought with might
Their struggles and sacrifices, a shining light
Rosa Parks, a woman of grace
Refused to give up her seat, a defining place
In history, her courage, a symbol so strong
Inspiring a movement, where rights belong
Martin Luther King Jr., a voice of change
His speeches, his passion, truly so strange
For peace and equality, he marched with pride
His “I Have a Dream” speech, will never hide
Harriet Tubman, a leader of the past
Her journey to freedom, a story that will last
She helped others escape from slavery’s hold
Her bravery, a story, never to be told
Civil Right Leaders
Rosa Parks – A civil rights activist and seamstress, Rosa Parks became a symbol of resistance to segregation in 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white person. Her act of defiance led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a key moment in the Civil Rights Movement.
Martin Luther King Jr. – A Baptist minister and social activist, King was one of the most prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. He advocated for nonviolent protest and delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963, calling for an end to racial discrimination and inequality.
Harriet Tubman – A former slave, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom and became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved people to escape to freedom in the North. She made 13 missions to rescue around 70 enslaved people and also served as a spy for the Union army during the Civil War.
In conclusion, Black History Month is an important time to recognize and honor the sacrifices and contributions of civil rights leaders like Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Harriet Tubman. Their courage, dedication, and determination in the face of adversity helped bring about significant change for black people in the United States.
